Colorado Rodeos
Grand County is a major center for rodeos in Colorado
with at least one rodeo event every weekend during the summer from May
through September.
Flying Heels Rodeo Series
The local rodeo season traditionally begins on Memorial weekend with the
start of the Flying Heels Rodeo Series at the arena on Highway 40 just
south of Granby. The series continues with a rodeo every Saturday
through the Fourth of July weekend.
Starting at 7:00 p.m. the Flying Heels rodeo always features some of the
best local and regional competitors who ride and rope in its open
events, including: bareback riding, saddle bronco riding, bull riding,
calf roping, steer wrestling, girls break-away roping, team roping, and
barrel racing.
Junior rodeo events are also offered which begin every Saturday
afternoon at 3:00 p.m.. Events include: mutton bustin', goat
undecorating, barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, break-away
roping, calf roping, team roping, steer riding and junior bull riding.
High Country Stampede Rodeo Series
Kick the city off your shoes at "the best little rodeo in Colorado." The
High Country Stampede Rodeo Series has been a Saturday night classic in
the Fraser Valley for the 19 years. Western barbecues offer their
distinct flavors and aromas to round out evenings of family adventure
entertainment.
Local and regional cowboys and cowgirls engage in no-holds-barred bronco
bustin', bull riding, and other rip roarin' events in hopes of winning
their shares of a lucrative cash purse. Even the young wranglers get
super competitive in the Junior Rodeo that kicks off at 5:00 p.m. These
rodeo future-stars engage in some of the same events as their seasoned
counterparts, including calf roping, barrel racing, and pole bending.
Then, at 7:30 p.m., the big guys and gals blast into the arena and give
a good old-fashioned western show without equal. Watching these skilled
riders on their well-trained horses turns the rodeos breakaway events
into almost an art form. Calf roping, team roping, barrel racing and
pole bending originated from training horses. Colorful clowns add to the
excitement of this great family outing.
In addition to great rodeo action, fans have the opportunity to enjoy
the Stampede's famous barbecue dinners at each of the rodeos. The
dinners, served from 5:00 p.m., include chicken, beef brisket, corn on
the cob and potato salad.
The High Country Stampede Rodeos are presented in the John Work Arena,
one mile west of Fraser, on Saturday evenings in July & August. The
all-weather arena features a permanent cover over its seating area, so
more than 1,000 spectators are comfortable during each week's rodeo.
Middle Park Fair & Rodeo
The finale to Grand County's rodeo season is always the Middle park Fair
& Rodeo held mid-September at the Grand County Fairgrounds in Kremmling.
Some of the very best rodeo competitors in Colorado and surrounding
states, as well as local riders compete.
