Grand County provides some of the best mountain biking opportunities in Colorado. From heart pumping uphill climbs and exhilarating single-track downhills to leisurely double-track trails through the forest, the Fraser Valley and Winter Park Resort have it all when it comes to mountain biking. The mountain bike options become seemingly endless when adding in the voluminous trails at Sol Vista, Snow Mountain Ranch and in the national Forest around Granby, Grand Lake and Kremmling.
The mountain bike trail system in Winter Park and the Fraser Valley has been called the best anywhere. The valley floor is very open and fairly level, and the mountains gradually rise above the valley. This allows mountain bikers of all abilities to enjoy themselves at their level and pace.
This area saw a great amount of activity during the earlier part of the century due to logging and railroads. These industries left behind countless miles of old roads and trails, which are perfectly suited for mountain biking. The base for the Fraser Valley mountain bike trail system evolved from these industries.
Novice, recreational and expert riders alike can appreciate Winter Park Resort’s 50 miles of varied terrain across a 7,600-acre permit. To get to the top of the slopes, riders can jump on the Zephyr Express chairlift which is specially equipped to carry bikes. Once on the mountain, bikers can choose from a variety of green, blue and black trails. Like ski trails, bike trails are rated in difficulty by color. The Winter Park Resort trails are unique because they link with the Fraser Valley’s vast 600-mile trail system, the heart of mountain biking in the area. The trails consist of mapped and marked trails of all types. No car shuttling is necessary, as trailheads are located in the towns of Winter Park and Fraser as well as Winter Park Resort.
Trails wind through fields of wildflowers or the tops of mountains with breathtaking views, or through majestic woods. Hundreds of additional miles of mountain biking trails can be found all over Grand County. It’s no wonder we’re called “Mountain Bike Capital, USA.”™
