Conclusions to the Berthoud Pass Mountain Access Project

Now that the inconvenience of all those delays is finally behind us, one can now marvel at the finished product and say that it is “a good thing”, even though there are the protagonists (like me) that would argue a tunnel would have made more sense. I won’t go into the arguments for and against as this would be futile and extend this monologue unnecessarily.

CDOT Project Engineer Gilbert says “CDOT was able to come to an environmentally sensitive area, upgrade and widen a narrow two-lane road (it was 25 feet in places) and leave with a sense that the environment and traveling public are both winners.”

CDOT Region 1 Transportation Director Jeff Kullman said, “We have preserved historical features and provided wildlife crossings and beautiful landscaping”. Indeed the Pass has earned many accolades and multiple awards in engineering, environmental protection and resource management and maintenance.

For me, even before construction on the Pass began, I would always breathe a sigh of relief on leaving the madness and pressure that is I-70 at “our” exit 232, and look forward to the last leg of the journey over Berthoud Pass in relative peace and harmony. Coming home has now been made just that bit more enjoyable – especially in the right vehicle!
